History The roots of today’s Schoeller Textil AG lie in an era defined by progress, pioneering spirit, and new beginnings. The 1860s were marked by major developments in Switzerland, from the founding of the Swiss Red Cross to landmark achievements such as the Gotthard Tunnel. It was in this forward-looking environment that our company was born.In 1868, Rudolph Schoeller moved from Breslau to Zurich and founded Switzerland’s first worsted yarn spinning mill in Schaffhausen under the name “Schoeller & Söhne” – laying the foundation for what is today Schoeller Textil AG.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Schoeller was entering a period of dynamic growth in innovation, production, and export. During this time, the company acquired its textile mill in Sevelen, while ongoing technical progress paved the way for greater efficiency, rationalization, and automation.
Geschichte Details
With the introduction of man-made fibres such as polyamide and elastane from the United States, Schoeller embraced a new era of textile innovation and developed elastic fabrics – including the first stretch ski pants, which soon replaced the wool trousers commonly worn at the time.

During the economic crisis of the 1970s, Schoeller established its first subsidiaries overseas and consolidated production. In the 1990s, the company further expanded its fabric range and became the first to process high-tensile aramid fibres in motorcycle wear. At the same time, Schoeller strengthened its commitment to ecological production, receiving its first awards and firmly embedding innovation and sustainability into its everyday work.

Around 100 years after its foundation, Schoeller continued to expand internationally through its own branches, joint ventures, and strategic partnerships. In 2001, the company became the first worldwide to produce according to the ecological principles of the bluesign® system. Over the years, Schoeller invested more than CHF 100 million in production facilities and ecological innovation. In 2020, Formosa Taffeta Co., Ltd. became a 50% shareholder in Schoeller Textil AG through a capital increase.

Today, Schoeller opens a new chapter by combining its Swiss roots with a global set-up. Building on more than 150 years of textile engineering expertise, we operate with a dedicated development and manufacturing structure across Asia and Europe, ensuring the continued development, scaling, and delivery of high-performance textile solutions for global markets.
